The Lives We Never Lived

I have opened up the tarot cards on  – the past, the present and the future in a general reading for the times of :  wondering, the imagining, the quiet “what if” moments that we all have.  The wisdom of our past, the power of our present and the possibilities of our future.

There are moments in every life when we quietly wonder about the roads we did not take. The choices we did not make.  The opportunities we let pass.  The dreams we placed aside.  We may find ourselves asking “What if I had chosen differently?” “What if I had stayed?” “What if I had left sooner?” “What if I had followed that dream?” “What if my life had taken another path?”

These questions are part of being human.  They often appear during times of change, loss, reflection or when life has not unfolded in the way we once imagined.    We naturally wonder about the lives we could have lived.

The relationship that never happened.  The career we never pursued.  The home we never created.  The journey we never took.  The person we might have become.  Yet there is something important to remember.

The lives we imagine are often viewed through a beautiful but incomplete lens.  We see the happiness, the success and the moments we believe we missed.  But we rarely imagine the challenges that path may have carried.

Every life has difficulties. Every choice brings lessons.  Every journey has moments of uncertainty.

The path we did not choose may not have been the perfect life our imagination creates.  It may have contained it’s own struggles, disappointments and lessons waiting to be learned.

Perhaps life is not about finding the one perfect path.

Perhaps it’s about discovering the meaning within the path we are walking.

The Wisdom Within Our Past

When we look back at our past, we often judge ourselves through the wisdom we have gained today.  We ask why we did not see things more clearly.  Why we stayed too long.  Why we did not choose differently.

But we must remember that the person we were then did not have the knowledge, experience or understanding that we carry now.

We made choices with the awareness we had at that moment.  The past is not there to punish us, it is there to teach us.  The joys taught us gratitude, the challenges taught us strength, the endings taught us acceptance.  The unexpected moments revealed parts of ourselves we may never have discovered otherwise.

The Power of The Present

The present moment is where our power lives.

Many spiritual traditions teach that our inner world influences the life we create.  The thoughts we nurture, the beliefs we hold, and the energy we carry can influence the way we experience the world around us.

The Law of Attraction speaks of the idea that our focus, intentions and emotions help draw experiences and opportunities that align with our energy.

This does not mean we are responsible for every hardship we experience.  Life brings unexpected events.  People face loss, change and challenges they did not choose.  But we are not powerless.  We can choose what we carry forward.  A thought of fear may keep us focused on what is missing.  A thought of hope can help us recognize possibilities we may have overlooked.  The beliefs we nurture become the foundation from which we create.

Our thoughts become seeds.

Through our choices, actions and intentions, we participate in shaping the life that unfolds before us.

The Future Still Holds Possibility

Sometimes we become so focused on the doors that closed behind us that we forget to notice the doors still waiting ahead.

A person may believe they are too old to begin again.  Someone may believe they have missed their chance at love.  Another may feel their greatest opportunities have already passed.   But life does not have a deadline for transformation.

People discover love at unexpected times.  People find purpose after years of searching.  People begin new chapters when they thought their story was already written.  What feels like a delay may sometimes be preparation.  What feels like an ending may sometimes be creating space for something new.

Every soul has it’s own journey.  A seed does not become a flower by comparing itself to another seed.  It grows in its own season.  We are not behind.  We are not forgotten.  We are simply continuing to become.

Making Peace With The Lives We Never Lived

The lives we never lived will always remain a part of our imagination.

They represent dreams, possibilities and versions of ourselves we once considered becoming.  But they are not where our power exists.  Our power exists here.  In this breath.  In the choices we make today.  The past offers wisdom.  The present offers choice .  The future offers possibilities.  Together, they create the unfolding story of our lives.

We cannot live every possible life.  We are given one precious journey.  One heart.  One opportunity to love, learn, forgive, grow and leave something meaningful behind.  The life you are living may not be the life you once imagined.  But it is still a life filled  with possibilities.

The next chapter has not yet been written.

Perhaps the most beautiful parts of your story are still waiting to unfold!
